VAG KKL installation

What do you need?

  • A computer running Windows
  • An internet connection
  • A KKL interface
  • A supported car (not CAN-BUS) of the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda brand

The installation manual is suitable for:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10

Step-by-step plan for installing KKL interface

Important: make sure the KKL cable is not connected to your computer, do this only when prompted.

The installation consists of two parts, installing the drivers and installing VCDS lite. Below are the steps of installation.

  • Download the installation files: KKL installation
  • Start in the first folder“1 - Driver installatie” In the folder, click install.exe, complete the installation and proceed to the next step.
  • Go to the second folder“2 - VCDS Lite” and click on the installation file KKL409.1.exe, complete the installation.
  • Connect the KKL cable to a USB port of the computer, the drivers will install automatically.
  • Connect the KKL cable to your car and put it on the ignition.
  • An icon has been created on the desktop “Release 409-1” Click on this icon and VCDS Lite will open.
  • Click on the menu item“options”
  • At the top left of the screen you can select 4 com ports or a USB port. The KKL interface emulates a COM port, so you should always select a COM port here.
  • Per computer a different COM port is automatically selected, this is always different according to ports used, therefore we need to check which COM port the KKL is connected to. Start at COM1 and click on test, repeat this for each COM port until the test is successful.
  • After the test is successful, you can use VCDS lite, if not successful, please continue at the "troubleshooting" section.

Troubleshooting

The KKL interface is for older models without CAN-Bus, therefore the software and drivers have not been updated for quite some time, this while newer and newer Windows versions have come along. Compatibility has been skewed over the years. Below are solutions to common problems.

Change COM port

If the test of the interface cannot be completed successfully, the interface may have been assigned a COM port by the system above COM-5 follow the steps below.

  • Go to device management on your computer
  • In device management, go to“Ports (COM & LPT)” here you can see USB-Serial CH340 with the assigned COM port, this should be 1-4, is this a different number, we need to change it.
  • To change the port, right-click USB-Serial CH340 and click Properties
  • Click on the port settings tab
  • Click on advanced
  • Now you can choose a COM port, here choose a COM port that is free and falls between 1-4.
  • Click OK and restart VCDS Lite, through the test screen you can test if the interface is found correctly. Note that the car must be on ignition.

Run VCDS Lite as administrator

If the correct COM port is selected, but the interface still cannot be successfully tested, it is possible that VCDS does not have enough permissions to read certain data. This is easily remedied.

  • Locate the VCDS Lite icon on your desktop
  • Right-click on the VCDS Lite icon and left-click on properties.
  • Select the compatibility tab.
  • Check the option: run this program as administrator.
  • Click apply and OK.
  • Start VCDS Lite and see if the test on the correct COM port is now successful. Note again that the interface is connected and the car is on ignition.

Remove old drivers

If you connected the cable before installing the drivers, or previously installed an older KKL interface, old drivers may be loaded. These drivers should be removed first using the solution below.

  • Make sure the KKL cable is connected to your computer/laptop and go to device management on your computer.
  • In device management, go to“Ports (COM & LPT)” here you can see a number of devices listed under multiple names which have to do with emulating COM and/or USB ports.
  • All drivers (drivers) can give compatibility problems with the KKL interface, so we need to uninstall them.
  • One by one, right-click on these installed devices and left-click to choose Uninstall
  • Do this until all devices that could potentially conflict are removed.
  • Remove the KKL interface from the USB port
  • Start the driver installation from scratch
