Professional interfaces for Volkswagen
For garages and the serious hobbyist, a professional Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda OBD2 interface is indispensable in daily work. Unlike many other car brands, there is usually more equipment available for these brands that works in an easy way.
There are currently two leading brands of interfaces in the market, which are Ross Tech with their VCDS interfaces and VCP Systems with their VCP interfaces. Therefore, if you have an OBD2 problem or even OBD1, it can almost certainly be solved with one of these two brands.
What is the difference between VCP and VCDS?
This is a common question, sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. The main differences between these interfaces are found in the specializations.
VCP is slightly easier to use in some areas due to the so-called OCF (One Click Functions, or perform action with 1 click), while with VCDS it requires multiple actions. In this respect, the VCP is slightly easier to use than VCDS for the standard functions. Many workshops still choose VCDS for these cars because it has more functionality and is more flexible.
Despite that, VCP can do more in other areas, really meant for professional use. For example, VIM (Video In Motion) can be freely switched and ECUs can be flashed. Both of these operations do require additional modules to be purchased. Also note that updating VCP requires a 12-month subscription (first 12 months free). VCDS interfaces have free updates to the software, in addition, VCDS has more regular updates with new features and cars.
Advantages and disadvantages of both interfaces:
VCP:
- + One Click features to make adjustments easily and quickly
- + Lower purchase price
- + ECU flashing and VIM free switching possible (after purchase of additional modules)
- - Updates after 12 months cost 85 euros per 12 months
- - Additional modules require payment
- - Less explanation to be found on forums
- - Slightly cumbersome software installation
VCDS:
- + Well known and lots of information to be found on the Internet about use, coding, etc.
- + Easy software installation
- + Free updates
- + The standard in garage operations
- + A wireless variant available which can communicate with both computer and phone with app
- - Higher purchase price
- - Free switching VIM and ECU flashing not possible
